A fascinating bike trip to admire the Cretan culture, nature. It combines the magnificent landscape of Dikti and Sitia mountains, the Merabello area, the picturescue coastal and mountain villages and the marvelous beaches lying along the Cretan and Libyan seas. You can visit some famous archaeological sites in Crete such as the Palaces of the Minoan civilization Knossos or Malia (optional) and the Doric city Lato.

Ride an ebike and turn all hills into flat

A note about weather:

From February, the day temperature at East Crete is cool for comfortable cycling and in April you can expect temperate evenings. From May, the average sea temperature is 19 celcius and pleasant for longer baths. In summer months the temperatures are higher but with the option of an ebike the rides are comfortable even for the hardest climbs . From September comfortable temperatures are dominant again. Also, October and November are still good travel months, with small chance of rain and average sea temperature 21-22 Celcius. At East Crete because there are no big mountains the temperatures are higher and there is smaller chance of rain than the rest of Crete even during winter months

Surface and terrain

The tour is designed as an easy/intermediate self-guided riding experience, covering 40-70km each day, taking advantage of a fantastic network of quiet tarmac backroads and the most important places of interest of East Crete. We avoid the high ways. At each stage there are short and long slopes to master. It can be adapted to suit your individual needs. Although we ride on some main roads, east Crete is not so crowded and the traffic is low.

The Cycling Stages

1Day 1 | Hersonisos -Agios Nikolaos | Distance: 62/78km - Uphill: 829/1429m

Your first day starts from our bike Center at Analipsi where we fit the bikes and give you all the essential equipment for your trip.

Option 1 shorter: After you pass the touristic towns Hersonisos, Stalida and Malia you reach the Archaeological site of Malia one of the four Minoan Palaces and the place where was discovered the famous Minoan jewel with the bees. Your ride continues eastwards following the old road with less traffic and many picturesque villages to visit and stop for a refreshment. The coastal setlemants of Sisi and Milatos are ideal for a stop to enjoy a refreshment next to the sea. You will ride through the mountain by following low traffic roads and then you will reach Agios Nikolaos the most picturesque small city of Crete, a former fishermen village which was grown because of the tourism. A walk around the lake and stop for dinner at ones of the taverns is the best ending for your today tour.

Option 2 longer tour: Instead to go east and do more flat roads you ride south direction to Dikti mountains. You pass next to aposelemis damm the biggest lake in crete. After Avdou village starts an amazing climb from 230meters of Altitude to 850meters with amazing views and some nice villages to stop for a coffee before you reach the top at 850meters at Seli pass. Lasithi plateau the biggest plateau and the flattest area in Crete is famous as the place of birth of the king of Greek gods Zeus and for the windmills. From Lasithi Plateau you will follow a serpentine non traffic road through Dikti mountains that will take you.The 2nd option is not recommended with rainy weather

Mesa (inside) Merabello has a very special landscape. As you bike you will discover the man-made stone walls marking the roads and proprieties and a barren landscape which was chosen in the past from the monks who was searching for a quiet place to speak with god. The small picturesque and almost abandoned villages of Mesa Merabello will take you back to time and remind you how difficult was the life at this typical dry area of Crete. After Havgas village starts a serpentine road following the synonymous canyon until the coastal village of Plaka with amazing view of Spinalonga Island and Merabello Golf. At Plaka you can stop at one of the taverns for a coffee break or lunch and gaze Spinaloga the famous Lepra Island. The coastal road from Plaka until you reache Elounda, the riviera of Crete, is full of beaches for relaxing and sea swimming. After Elounda you jump on your bike and ride back to Agios Nikolaos with breath taking views of the coastal city. Optionally you can visit an olive oil farm (It is located on your way before Agios Nikolaos) for oil tasting.

The 3rd day of your trip you do the most coastal kilometers than any other day. From Agios Nikolaos you follow the old road that passes through many coastal villages. You will pass by many beaches but your destination for today is Mochlos a costal picturesque village with a small island in front and some of the best fish taverns in Crete. After you chill on the beach and enjoy your drinks and sea food you will return up to the old national road of Crete and then to Sitia. Sitia although one of the small towns of Crete is one of the most beautiful with a magnificent pedestrian road next to the sea for walking and enjoy a dinner and an evening drink.

The 4th day of your trip you will ride to the easternmost coast of Crete. On the way you will visit “Toplou Monastery” the most famous monastery of east Crete which was built as a castle and took its name from the Turks who had given the monks the right to possess cannons to defend the monastery from pirate raids. At toplou monastery there is one the best awarded winneries in Crete which you can visit and taste some local wine. Then you will ride eastern and visit the unique palm forest in Europe “Vai”.

The biggest palm forest of Europe is believed that was created from the Phοnician sailors who used to stop at this beach of Crete and eating their plums. You can relax on this beach and enjoy your lunch at one tavern. For returning back to Siteia there are two option. The easy way is to return back from Palekastro and the coastal road (the same way back). The second option passes through the mountain. You will visit some small villages through a unique landscape of small busches and herbs, typical of eastern Crete due to the lack of large mountains and scarce rainfall.

On the fifth day of your trip you will leave the picturesque city of Sitia and you will follow narrow streets through Orno Mountains passing through small villages in a landscape that has not been affected by time. You will cross Crete direction the South coast. During the route there are many beaches where you can dive to cool off in the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea with the best one in Agia Fotia. Your destination for today is the southernmost city in Europe, Ierapetra where it is worth visiting the Venetian Castle-Fortress of the 13th century "kales". In the afternoon after arriving at your hotel you can walk on the main pedestrian street by the sea and enjoy your dinner in one of the many beach taverns.

6Day 6 | Ierapetra - Agios Nikolaos | Distance: 50km - Uphill: 1000 m

On the last day of your trip you will leave the southernmost city of Crete and return to Agios Nikolaos following quiet roads at the southern foothills of Dikti mountains. Following a route that embraces the mountain you will have a wonderful view of both the southern and northern coasts of Crete passing through a larger forest of Crete. The traditional village of Kritsa is the ideal place to stop for coffee and walk in the picturesque alleys of the village where women exhibit their traditional handmade textiles. The next stop is the archeological site of the Doric city of Lato, 3km north of Kritsa between two hills with a panoramic view to the bay of Meramelos. The city of Lato was one of the main cities of Crete, whose port was Agios Nikolaos. Today it is the best preserved city of the classical Hellenistic period in Crete. Your route will end in the town of Agios Nikolaos with a last dip in the calm waters at the beach before we return back to the Bike center by Car

Τhe above program is indicative. It consists of 4 one way routes and two round trips. The first day you start from our bike center at analipsi. The last day the return from Agios Nikolaos is by car.

We can customize the Program in order to do 5 one way trips and one round trip. Start and finish from our bike center without Car transfer for the passenges (only lugage transfer). The first and the last tour will be the 2 options of the first day as you see the above itinerary.

The bike tours are self-guided, at your own pace, without a tour guide, but with detailed bicycle maps, high quality gps for navigation and directions. We reserve the right to make changes to the program if necessary due to weather or other circumstances.
