Monokara is the plateau at the northern foothills of Mount Orno of Sitia where during the summer months the shepherds from Sfaka and Tourloti villages drove their sheep and goats.
Monokara is a small plateau and we pass it very fast, there are no cafes or fountains with drinking water but there are several wells. The people we have met all the times we came here can be counted on the fingers of one hand, but their hospitality worth for a thousand. We still remember the Greek coffee Mr. Klinis serve us under the shade of a walnut tree at his backyard during a warm summer day many years ago. At Monokara worth to climb for the spectacular beauty of the route and the incredible views. Stone terraces with vineyards, three canyons (Koudoumas, Tsigounis and Koinopotamou), breathtaking view and an endless downhill from 800 meters to the sea. To the sea until Mochlos village (next to the islet with the same name and the Minoan settlement) and some of the best fish taverns in Crete. Just by the sea with a small pier and a tiny sandy beach Mochlos looks like a Greek island that you will fall in love from the first visit. We ride the route (as we have uploaded it) clockwise in order to avoid the steep uphill during the ascent. The East road that ascends from Tourloti village is cemented by 90% and the climb is easier and faster. During our ascent worth to visit the tower of Kornaros and at Myrsini village to do a stop at the small cafe above the high way to drink a coffee and refill the bottles with water before the big climb. In Mochlos our favorite place is George Fragkiadakis tavern "Kochilia" which we highly recommend.Η Μονοκαρά είναι το οροπέδιο στους βόρειους πρόποδες του βουνού Ορνό της Σητείας όπου τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες ανεβάζουν τα κοπάδια τους οι βοσκοί από τα χωριά Σφάκα και Τουρλωτή στα οποία και ανήκει.
Η Μονοκαρά είναι μικρό οροπέδιο και το πέρασμα μας είναι πολύ γρήγορο, καφενεία δεν υπάρχουν ούτε πηγή για νερό αν και θα βρούμε πολλά πηγάδια. Τα άτομα που συναντήσαμε όσες φορές ήρθαμε εδώ μετριούνται στα δάχτυλα ενός χεριού, η φιλοξενία τους όμως άξιζε για χίλια. Ακόμα θυμόμαστε τον καφέ που μας κέρασε ο κος Κλίνης κάτω από τον ίσκιο της καρυδιάς στην αυλή του σπιτιού του μια ζεστή μέρα του καλοκαιριού πριν από χρόνια. Στην Μονοκαρά αξίζει να ανέβουμε για την εκπληκτική ομορφιά της διαδρομής και την απίστευτη θέα. Πετρόχτιστες πεζούλες με αμπέλια, τρία φαράγγια (Κουδουμής, Τσιγγούνη και Κοινοπόταμου), Θέα που κόβει την ανάσα και ένα ατελείωτο downhill από τα 800 μέτρα μέχρι την θάλασσα. Μέχρι την θάλασσα στον οικισμό Μόχλο απέναντι από το ομώνυμο νησάκι με τον Μινωικό οικισμό και μερικές από τις καλύτερες ψαροταβέρνες της Κρήτης. Ακριβώς δίπλα στο κύμα με τον μικρό μόλο και μια μικροσκοπική παραλία ο Μόχλος θυμίζει περισσότερο Αιγαιοπελαγήτικό νησί που θα ερωτευτούμε από την πρώτη επίσκεψη. Η διαδρομή όπως την έχουμε ανεβάσει γίνεται κατά την φορά των δεικτών του ρολογιού προκειμένου να αποφύγουμε της απότομες ανηφόρες κατά την ανάβαση. Ο Ανατολικός δρόμος που ανεβαίνει από την Τουρλωτή είναι τσιμεντοστρωμένος κατά 90% και η ανάβαση είναι πιο εύκολη και γρήγορη. Κατά την ανάβαση μας αξίζει να επισκεφτούμε τον πύργο των Κορνάρων και μόλις φτάσουμε στην Μυρσίνη να κάνουμε μια στάση στο μικρό καφενείο πάνω από την εθνική για να πιούμε ένα καφέ και να εφοδιαστούμε με νερό πριν την μεγάλη ανάβαση. Στο Μόχλο αγαπημένο μας στέκι είναι η ταβέρνα «Κοχύλια» του Γιώργου Φραγκιαδάκη την οποία και συνιστούμε ανεπιφύλακτα.
