1How we started
Crete. Our latest flyer (size A4) is a very good map of the greater Hersonissos area where our bike center is located. Our most recent effort started as an attempt to record on map all the asphalt roads in Crete, a useful tool for the promotion of Crete for cycling training and cycling tourism in general. As the creation of the map progressed, we added extra elements from the nature, history and geography of Crete, trying at the same time not to make it boring and difficult to read. We have added additional points of interest that most maps do not show. We recorder the visitable wineries and Olive oil mills, the museums, all the archeological sites, the Venetian fortresses and the Ottoman castles as well as many other places in a unique way. that highlights them without confusing them with the rest. With every extra item we added, we changed all the map structure to achieve the desired result. Finally we created a map not only for cycling tourism, but at the same time for wine tourism, religious, mountaineering, canyoning, speleology, climbing, and much more. I map that we help to promote the outdoor tourism in Crete, spport the small villages and help to extend the touristic period The map does not remain stationary but will be renewed and enriched with each new print following the changes. Our goal is to promote alternative tourism in Crete.
2Why we do it?
From the first time we started cycling we believed in the great potential of Crete in alternative tourism and outdoor activities. Unfortunately, tourism in Crete has developed too much in specific areas, mainly on the north coast of the island, focused on the Sun and the sea. In contrast, the hinterland withers and becomes desolate. With our map we want to give a little help to the hinterland of Crete to develop tourism. The treasure of Crete and its great advantage is the nature, geography, climate, history, cultural heritage, the Cretan cuizine.Everyone has a share in them and can benefit through the development of alternative tourism.
3Map Legend. Roads and paths
Initially we wanted to create a map for the road cyclists. A map that is easy to regognize where the roads are asphalt, gravel or path. A map that shows with diferent colours which roads are good and safe to ride and which to avoid. On the map we show all the new roads which was constructed untill February 2021. We show even the new road of Stoumpoulas plateau (currently closed), the new asphalt road from Zoniana village to Psiloritis mountain or even the new (under construction) road to Kasteli airport. Although our map is perfect for road cycling we recommend to visit our blog to download gps files of cycling routes for your gps, or open them with one of the best cycling apps. For mountainbikers and hikers we recommend the use of a gps. The map is more useful to organize a trip before you visit a place.
4Map Legend. Icons and symbols
Our map is user friendly and fun. We use many different symbols, icons, colors and fonts. Reading the map is easy and interesting without getting tired of unnecessary information. We display all points of interest with different symbols so that they are easy to find. Our map is user friendly and fun. We use many different symbols, icons, colors and fonts.
